Learn How to Become a Habitat Steward

Habitat and Wildlife Keepers (HAWK) will host a National Wildlife Federation Habitat Stewards Training. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in:

• Learning how to create certified wildlife habitats in different locations
• The value and benefits of native plants and the disadvantages of non-native invasive ones
• About our native NC wildlife
• Soil and water issues
• How to create/enhance habitat for the monarch butterfly as part of the Butterfly Highway Project
• And lots, lots more!

Requirements

Habitat Steward Volunteers are individuals with a keen interest in the environment, and a willingness to volunteer their time and expertise to help others create or restore wildlife habitat. Interested individuals should have an interest in gardening, nature, the outdoors, and/or wildlife, as well as good communication skills, self- motivation, and enjoy working with or mentoring others. These combined interests contribute to a healthy, sustainable environment in backyards, parks, and throughout their community.

Habitat Stewards need to be able to commit to providing 30 hours of service to the National Wildlife Federation within a year of completing their training. Trained habitat stewards will be asked to volunteer their time over the next year in the creation or restoration of habitat in the Matthews area.

Details

The training will take place July 16, 17, 23 and 24 at Matthews Community Center, located downtown Matthews. Habitat Steward Training includes 24-hours of class time, expert speakers, and materials. Applicants must attend entire training. Class size is limited. Volunteer commitment is required. Total cost of materials will be $55.00.
